Landmark Theaters axes discount cards...or not

Landmark Theaters axes discount cards...or not
Submitted by dianaprince on Friday, November 18, 2005 - 10:22pm Landmark Theaters

See...it's not just the Kendall. Check out this post on Cinematical:

"Last night I went to see Ellie Parker (which I'll be reviewing later) at one of my local theaters owned by Landmark. Most of the films I go to, both for work and pleasure, I see at Landmark-owned theaters. Here in Seattle we are blessed to have a passel of Landmark theaters bringing us a slate of indie and foreign films we'd otherwise never see. Usually, I buy a Landmark Discount Card, which for $30 gives me five tickets I can use anytime except prime time on Friday and Saturday. At six bucks a ticket instead of the usual nine, the discount card is a must-have for folks like me who catch lots of indie films. So you can imagine my surprise last night when I said, "I'd like to buy a discount card", only to be told, "We aren't selling them anymore". I stepped in out of the cold to find out why."

Patrons lost

Wow, this is too much damage control, too late. Lauren's comments are well stated-- offended patrons will likely never return. Well-planned move, Landmark. Only a billionaire would think that this was a better alternative for patrons. Remember that he, and those who work closely with him, will never have to stand face-to-face with patrons, dressed in an ugly smock, informing them that essentially their loyalty means nothing to this company. And those at the top can insulate themselves from the rank and file ( namely employees who are actually confronted by infuriated patrons about this type of policy change )by comforting themselves with the health care, guaranteed hours, vacation time and holidays with their families that they deny those that work under them for less than a working wage.

I dont get it? Things change, business changes, new things come and old things go. Whats the big deal here? I am new to the site so I am not looking to get into a fight over this but I dont get it. I am a landmark movie buff and to be honest, I dont care. I did buy the discount book and now that it is gone I will move on to the new program that is offered. From my understanding the new program is a bit more money up front but in the end it works out. Now I can use the pass anytime I want. I would buy more then 5 books in a year anyway. Well like I said I am not looking for a fight but those are my thoughts.

I have looked into all that you guys are "fighting" for and I am on the fence. I will continue to read your site and others like it to make my mind up. Not that it matters to you if I am for or against your cause but I thought I would put it out in the open.

I would imagine many people feel the way you do, however, apparently there were enough customers who did feel strongly enough about it to make Landmark reconsider, as they reversed their policy:

The new group rate tickets which must be bought in books of 25 will still be offered, which is a good deal considering they don't expire. I do think many people will appreciate having the new option. The issue I had with the new tickets is that many of our customers do not have $175 (as opposed to the $33 discount card) to drop at once on movie tickets. Offering both options to customers is a good idea, especially since the discount card has more restrictions. Just eliminating the affordable option was clearly not popular with many customers.

Thank you for your comments. It's nice to know that you care enough to read what's out there about your local movie theater, whether you agree or not.
