Just wanted to know how everthing is coming? How is it at the work place? Is your contract done? If so did you get what you want? How long did it take to get the union stuff going, I mean from the moment you wanted to form a union to actualy getting voted in. What is going on with your wages? Just want to get some ideas.....thats all for now, need to go to work and we all know work is not fun.

We first contacted UFCW Local 791 mid-May this year and we had the vote on July 30th – so it was a fairly quick process.

The workplace has changed in that there is a sense of empowerment that wasn’t there before.  Even though not much has changed in the day to day job (although a lot of customers continue congratulate us – which is awesome) it’s nice to feel that we have some recourse if something happens.

We have just starting negotiations, which promise to be a longer process.   There will be more on that when there’s more to report.

As far as wages go, ours are the same (and I assume will stay that way until we get our contract– I have heard a rumor that I need to check out before I say anything else.

Just wanted to know how thing are going? What about that "rumor" that you needed to check on? When you say that the negotiations will be a long process, how long do you think before a contract will get done? Are all of the employee's involved in the make up of the contract?

The rumor was that the wage freeze is over.  I have heard from a couple sources that other Landmarks have been told that they will be getting raises in the near future.  However, no one has been told this at the Kendall.  So far, I do not know that any theater staff has gotten a raise or even review yet - there is just talk of it.

If anyone reading this works at a Landmark and recently received a raise or review, please let us know (you can contact me directly at roadtonowhere333@yahoo.com if you do not want to post something). No idea on the timeline of the contract.

All staff members who wish to be involved can be, to whatever degree they want.

Do you work at a Landmark?  Any stories to share?

I do not work at a Landmark

I do not work at a Landmark theatre. I do however work for a theatre. I do not wish to let that information out at this time but I will say that myself and a few others are watching what happens with you guys to see if we want to do anything. We have been speaking about it but we are not sure if it is even worth the time. It is just a part time job for most of us and it is not that hard of a job but at the same time we get tried of putting up the crap that is given to us. I don't know! Like I said we are watching what happens with you guys.

On another note, if other theatres in your company do give out raises what will happen with you guys. That would suck if you went through all of this and now you can't get a raise due to the contract not being complete.

Untill next time,
Chow

That is fantastic to hear!

That is fantastic to hear!  In fact, that’s the number one reason we have a site.  The best resource we had was advice/information from other theatre employees who attempted to unionize.

If you haven’t yet, check out the bordersunion.org site.  They have an example contract up and tons of info.  They were the closest comparable workplace I found - part-time employees, lots of turnover and a younger staff.

Concerning the rumored raises, clearly an effort like this isn’t all about the Benjamins. There are more issues than a 25 cent an hour raise which are worth the wait.  Besides, in the long run, it works better for us since we will have set wage increases rather than waiting for Landmark to give raises every couple years or so.

And in case anyone on your staff is wondering, we don’t pay union dues until we have a contract.

If you ever want to e-mail me directly to chat about specifics not fit for a message board, e-mail me at roadtonowhere333@yahoo.com.
